Sometimes it is valuable to look at nature for tips on how to better organize our lives and businesses.
LIFE LESSONS FROM THE GEESE
As each goose flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird following. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds
71% more flying range that if each bird flew alone.
Lesson 1: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier
because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets
back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the birds immediately in front.
Lesson 2: If we have as much sense as a goose, we will join in formation with those who are headed where we wanted to go.
When a goose gets tired, it rotates back in formation and another goose flies at the point position.
Lesson 3: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership people as with the geese- interdependent with one
another.
The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
Lesson 4: We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging, not something less helpful.
When a goose gets sick or injured, two geese drop out of formation and follow their fellow member down to help
provide protection. They stay with this member of the flock until he or she is able to fly again or dies. Then they launch
out to join another formation or catch up with their own flock.
Lesson 5: If we have as much sense as the geese, we’ll stand by one another like they do.
The take away is that with proper alignment, goals, drive and encouragement, both internally and with the
help of others, we are able to go much farther in our personal and corporate lives.
